Dogue De Bordeaux
Book review by Dee Dee Andersson Let me begin by saying that this is the third book I have been asked to review for BB Press of The Netherlands and I cannot complete this task without taking the opportunity to compliment all who are involved in the production of these books. The BB Press produced books are so beautifully compiled and presented that it has been my pleasure to enjoy them and afterwards to share my thoughts. This latest volume, The World of Dogues de Bordeaux, is both a thoughtful and an elaborate collaboration of Dogue de Bordeaux breeders and their fabulous dogs. The Dogues included in this book come from all corners of the world, from the United States and Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and nearly every European country is represented. All in all, an amazing accomplishment to assemble so much information, from so many places, from so many people, and about so many dogs, indeed, very well done. What could possibly be more appropriate than that this book about the DDB begin with a Portrait of ‘the father,’ Mutual Love? This section provides a candid introduction of and brief history about the father of the breed, Professor Raymond Triquet, a gentleman and a scholar who is something of a legend in his own time and most certainly a legend in Dogues. This book offers page after page of truly beautiful color photographs of so many DDB, all carefully sorted and categorized by the different countries with which they are associated, and many of the photographs are supported by respective three-generation pedigrees so that at a glance you see the individual representative of the breed and you are provided with his breeding history. I predict, in years to come, this book will be valued not only for the obvious pleasure it will give future breed lovers who browse through the pictures, but also for its historical significance. Someday this book will adopt a historical mantel because it preserves so much pedigree information in one package. The World of Dogues de Bordeaux is a veritable feast for the Dogue De Bordeaux fancier. It has everything, color and black and white photographs of famous breed members, pedigrees, history, research, names of world-wide breeders and kennels and best of all, opinions from well known, highly respected breed experts abound, advice and guidance about the correct head, movement, structure and type, behavior, breed characteristics, information about exhibiting in conformation and agility. Hopefully, current and future breeders of the remarkable Dogue de Bordeaux will continue to breed true to the type the standard wants. I was very impressed with the consistency of these DDB dogs from all over the world. There were only a few I thought showed more Bulldog or Mastiff type than might be desirable. This book is a wonderful addition to any Molosser lover’s library. In closing, may I stress to all DDB breeders that they should pay close attention to the wisdom expressed by Professor Triquet about how he has advanced softer Dogues de Bordeaux. The atmosphere in which we live today, globally, is not friendly towards our beloved dogs. Breed Specific Legislation is a rolling, growing, poisonous snowball. It falls to all of us to do whatever we can do to guard Our Guardians, they need our protection. Socialize your dogs. Be sure they are model citizens, enable them to make a positive breed statement, help them be softer. The alternative is unthinkable. Dee Dee Andersson Author – Mastiff, Aristocratic Guardian
